Lesson 6: Important questions before marriage

On the seven areas of questions that should be clarified before deciding on marriage, and how to ask them in a way that gets honest, useful answers.

Many marriage decisions are made based on a handful of meetings, a good first impression, and a feeling that "it feels right." But a lasting marriage is built on knowledge, not just feeling. In this lesson we go through seven key areas that should be explored before committing to a person, and how to ask about them so you get honest answers instead of rehearsed or evasive ones. The goal is for you to enter a possible engagement period with your eyes open, rather than with hopes that later turn out to be unfounded.

Section 01

Why the questions must be asked before, not after

A recurring pattern among couples who end up in crisis is that crucial questions were never asked before the wedding. People assumed things about each other instead of asking: they assumed the other person wanted kids, that they shared the same view on money, that they agreed on where to live, or that they had similar expectations about how much time to give to work versus family. When these TermSomething you take for granted about another person without having confirmed it, which often lies behind later misunderstandings in marriage.s turn out to be wrong after the wedding, the situation is much harder to handle than if the question had been raised in time.

Asking questions before marriage isn't about distrust, it's about respect for both people's future. Someone who's serious about building a long-term relationship welcomes honest questions, while someone who avoids or gets provoked by reasonable questions is often signaling something important in itself. The questions should be asked in a spirit of sincere curiosity and mutual respect, not as an interrogation.

Section 02

The seven question areas, part 1: values, religion, and family

The first area concerns religious practice and core values: how does the person actually practice their faith in everyday life, not just in theory? What values guide important life choices? Differences in the degree of religiosity, rather than in religious affiliation itself, are one of the most common causes of conflict in long-term marriages.

The second area is about the relationship with one's own and the other's family: what's the person's relationship with their parents and siblings like, what role is the in-laws expected to play in the future home, and how are tensions handled between loyalty to one's family of origin and loyalty to the new nuclear family? The third area concerns views on children; whether you want kids, how many, and what values you want to raise them with.
